There was a time, not so long ago, when dessert was dessert – sugar laden, high in fat, with highly processed flour. We are talking about the 90s here. What was considered ‘healthy’ at the time, is now considered not healthy at all, a.k.a. low fat desserts that had a lot more sugar to compensate for the lack of fat (frozen yoghurt anyone?). Now of course we can create desserts that also have nutritional value using whole-grains, nuts, seeds, and natural sugars from fruit, honey or maple syrup.
So back in those days, if I wanted to ‘diet’ or cut back on dessert I would have dates with a cup of tea. Dates are nature’s candy, and satisfy a sweet tooth without the need to eat the whole box.
More recently I discovered that eating dates on their own wasn’t a bad idea, but an even better one is combining them with nuts and seeds, giving them a healthier dose of nutrition, lessening their extreme sweetness, and reducing the spike in your blood sugar.
And here comes the date balls….also very rightly referred to as bliss balls! You basically combine dates with nuts, seeds and any superfoods or flavors you like in a food processor to make a delicious snack or dessert.
In the recipe below I combined a favorite combo of hazelnuts, coffee and cinnamon that would go perfectly with your morning coffee or afternoon pick-me up. Keep them plain or roll them in cocoa powder, more cinnamon, shredded coconut or even ground nuts.
1-2 tsp powdered coffee (I used organic decaf Turkish)
Instructions:
In a food processor combine oats and sunflower seeds and process until ground.
Add the remaining ingredients and process until mixed well and the mixture comes together.
Pinch off rounded teaspoon sized pieces of the mixture and roll into balls, making about 12. Roll into any desired coatings such as cocoa powder, shredded coconut or ground nuts.
