Homemade Healthy Spanish Latte

It’s been so busy at Crumbs the past month, I haven’t been able to blog like I usually do. I truly do miss experimenting in the kitchen and sharing my adventures on here. I do continue to experiment, but not enough time to re-test recipes, and then blog about them.
So what have I been busy with? Well I’m happy to say that our new menu is finally here and it’s better than ever! We are open daily from 8am to 10:30pm. Breakfast is served until 12:45pm. The new Halloumi Shashouka Flatbread is already a customer favorite, and the Crack Spinach Salad has anyone who’s tried it coming back for more. Although I’m not much of a meat eater, but the Gemeyze Street Tacos are a must if you do eat meat.
In addition to the new menu, I’ve been busy preparing for the launch of the Kid’s Love Kuwait activity in collaboration with the talented Mohamed AlHemely and his crew, and Boubyan Bank. It’s been a blast preparing for it and the first weekend went really well. The activity will be every weekend in February. You can sign up the kids and find out more by going to this link.
So I was able to quickly make a recipe this week, culminating in a healthy vegan Spanish latte. Not sure about the rest of the world, but Spanish lattes are definitely the craze over here in Kuwait. The best I’ve had is at Arabica…YUM! But since they don’t have dairy-free milk and they use condensed milk, it’s not something I can enjoy regularly. So I ventured to make a healthier dairy-free version at home that I can enjoy daily virtually guilt-free….and I was so happy with the result! Definitely a nice change to my usual cup of joe.
It does require some advanced preparation, especially if you’re gonna make you’re own almond milk (highly advised to get a creamier taste). I’ve explained two methods below just in case you don’t have a milk frother handy. I got a couple of shots of espresso from Crumbs since I don’t have an espresso machine at home. So feel free to use whatever coffee you have available and according to your preferred taste.
The ingredients below link homemade almond milk and coconut condensed milk, which will make a lot more than 1 cup. However, the ingredients below are enough to make enough for 1 person. If you prefer it sweeter you can always add a little more of the condensed milk or dates, and less sweet leave out the date. If you already used vanilla when making the almond milk you can leave out, and or just add 1/4 teaspoon.

To make 1 cup

Blender only method
  1. Place the two milks, date and vanilla in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into a small saucepan and warm up until hot but not boiling.
  3. Pour back into the blender, securing the lid, however keeping an opening for some air to escape. Cover with a towel if necessary. Starting on slow, increase the speed to high until the mixture is nice and frothy.
  4. In the meantime prepare your espresso and pour into your cup. Pour the frothed milk over the coffee and enjoy!
Blender and frother method
  1. Place the two milks, date and vanilla in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into a small saucepan and warm up until hot but not boiling.
  3. Pour back into the your frother or use a handheld further to froth the milk.
  4. In the meantime prepare your espresso and pour into your cup. Pour the frothed milk over the coffee and enjoy!
