Dairy-Free Sweet Potato Cheese Sauce

Jump To Recipe
This dairy-free cheese sauce is sooooo yummy! My favorite way to enjoy it is on these cauliflower steaks. You can also use it on veggie burgers, roasted veggies, or as a dip for nachos.
The best way to cook the sweet potato is by steaming. Peel the sweet potato, chop into cubes, then steam until soft. Otherwise, bake the whole sweet potato until soft on the inside, then scoop out the flesh.
Ingredients for dairy-free cheese sauce with sweet potato

A few notes about the ingredients…

Raw cashews add a lovely creamy taste. Another option is to use macadamia nuts.
Buttery coconut oil is best for flavor, but you can also use ghee or regular coconut oil.
If you plan to use vegetable stock, the addition of salt will depend on how salty your stock is.
Nutritional yeast adds that cheesy and umami flavor, and so does the miso paste. An alternative to the miso paste is a tablespoon of soy sauce or tamari. Initially leave out the salt if using soy sauce.
The rest of the ingredients are pretty straight forward…so let’s make some sauce!

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

*For that umami flavor from the miso, another option would be to use soy sauce or tamari instead.

Instructions:

1. Make sure the cashews are soaked and the sweet potato is cooked in advance. See the introduction about how to bake the sweet potato.
2. Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking if needed.
